Location: England.:) | I havent told anyone this story apart from Bex [yesterday] and i think its time to tell it as toots is going to be more part of my life soon as she is going to be my horse.
Tootsie Pie's Story.
About 4 years ago toots went to these loaners [she was owned not by my mum then] and they basically just ruined her they whipped her back legs and hurt her, frightened her out of her death, overjumped her and had a massive fall and she almost ripped her front tendon in her leg, & got splints, they left her out in a field for ages , she went missing because the loaners didnt keep in touch with frankie [old owner of toots] and she got strangles etc and rain scald, was skin and bone because they didnt even look after her they just basically left her to die because she was no use as they ruined her, they were gonna sell her aswell >.<
frankie was so worried after a couple of months and couldnt find her horse or track down the loaners so she searched herself and found her in a field with nothing to eat or drink, she had rain scald and was skin&bone & strangles. Frankie brought back a trailer and just took her away. took toots more than6 months to recover. she has never wanted to touch a jump in the past 4 years because she has been so terrified that she will be hurt or soething horrible will happen to her.
thanks to these loaners she has had 3 horrible accidents , one was she almost took out her eye & had to go to hospital etc for operations as something fell over on the yard, the other was there was a bang on the yard and she took the fence post with her cos she was tied up to it and got hurt, and the other was there was a plastic bag and she tripped up on it and hurt herself.
and what well what i am trying to do is get her back into this world and train her to jump again nicely and safely but its just so scary and my confidence is lacking from the falls, she wont even go near a pole, how bad she is i just dont think im going to be able to do it, and im really scared, she bucks aswell thanks to them, she never used to buck.
she is supposed to be my next horse but i dont think i will be able to its so scary no-one rides her at are yard cause shes really dangerous my mum has smashed her hip up only a couple of months ago when she tried to get on toots on the mounting bench & she jumped outa her skin because of the wind. also she has bucked me & my mum and frankie millions of times before, my mum has lost her confidence on toots aswell especially as she has just had a really bad accident on toots just a couple of months ago when she smashed her hip up.
shes 16 now, & not doing anything she deserves to do something in her life before she used to be an amazzzing jumper and dressage used to compete at 3'0 course with frankie, but she wont go near a pole now. i dont know what im going to do she is doing nothing in her life atm and everyone is too scared to ride her we are so scared & dont no wwhat to do. she sometimes occasionaly will go over a small rustic pole but not often. & maybe this answers ur wonders why i never talk tht much about toots - cos i never ride her :/
she needs loads of confidence & my mum is going to help me , but i just feel so scared . she rushes everything like i really think she has had a gate accident everytie u bring her through a stable door or field gate she nearly runs-over u through it she like gallops and charges through it and shows the whites of heer eyyes :/ and the same with jumping she CANNOT walk over a pole she bucks and rears and gallops over the poles and does a massive leapp :/ :( she is so amazing ive just got to get heer back properly again but its gonna be harrddd & im going to need alot of help with her , im so worried shes soo freaked out of her skin poor thing :/
i thought shanty was soo hard to bring on [she was western trained and a bit crazy] and ive sorted her out now and im starting fro the beginning with toots & she's going to be even harder :/ she is ruined &terrified, as soon as she hears something or see;'s something like a pole she will go mental & in her mad arab mood and buck and show whites of eyes etc and snort i just get so nervous like over a pole or something i will get butterflies cos i no what she is gonna do and it freaks me out and i just cant do it she goes mental and rears and everything today i fell off i was trying to work her confidence up at poles but she wasnt having any of it she went crazzy and went round and round in mad gallop & bucking till i fell off :/ it was abit like a rodeo tbh. like western when they get on the wild ponies.
I really need your help big time :/

Location: Wales,swansea<-Booyakasha!!!! | Have you tried Getting her close to them on the lunge?Rather than push her when yolur mounted,Ask her to approch and accept the poles near her.
If she shys away calm her down and take her away from the poles and do some small circles in trot getting larger so she gets a little bit closer every other circle.
Have you joined up with her?As you know when you join up with a horse it will have more trust in you.She should follow you without a leadrope or a lunge line.Once you have,Put a pole at the bottom of the pole,Work her at the top so shes used to looking at it.Clip on a lunge line and circle her towards the pole,If the whites of her eyes are starting to show,Circle her away.
Do this with a lunge line, not a Lead rope so that if she rears or bucks or bolts your can get out of the way and regain control without being in a lot of danger.
Hope that helps a little.:)

Haven't joined up with her no, but my mum has, but that was a while ago.
No she just doesnt want to go near them, if you walk her past them she will swerve away from them and just say NO.

Location: Devon. | Izziaboel, You Musn't Get Butterflies or She Will Think That it Really is Scary So She Will Be Even More Scared. Maybe Put The Poles in The School/Field and Turn Her Out With Them in There. Do Toots/Sharrife/Shanty Share Fields? if They Do, They'll (Maybe) Show Her That They're Not Scary, Like They'll Eat Next To Them and Not Be Scared. Do Some Natural Horsemanship Maybe. Also, Try Placing One Pole and Lead Her Past (Far Away and Then Gradually Get Closer) With Shanty infront Of Her (she Would Show Toots That They're Not Going To Eat Her) When She Walks Past (Even With Snorts and Stuff) Give Her Alot Of Fuss and Praise, Do This Sort Of Every Day but Very Gradually. Then Do it With Two Poles Some Meters Apart and Walk Her Through Give Alot Of Praise When She Does, Repeat What You Did With Just The One Pole. it's All About Trust Really, So Do Some Groundwork With Her :)
i Hope it Helpss x |

I try not to get butterflies but i cant help it :((
I don't think we would be able to put poles out in the field, all the horses that are on our yard stay out together as a herd, as we have bigg fields.
I will try leading her past poles :) She doesn't like Shanty though - she's best with no-one tbh :L
Thanks for the help :)

Location: West Midlands. | Emma's having the same problem with Beau but in a different way.
He refuses to have anyone on his back unless it's in walk and they're not touching his sides.
I've watched him, put his girth on he goes mental trying to push you out of his way and etc.
Bucks and rear, bronks whenever you touch his side.
I don't really know how to help tbf :\ all i can say if put your trust in the horse inside you may be bricking it :L But try showing your confidence on the outside it sometimes helps.
Talk to the horse when around her or hum a slow tune.
Never show a horse your scared you proberly already know so :)
Emma has hired a parelli trainer who's helping Beau with his mentalness.
Like Emma said.
It's not that they don't want to do it.
It's that they haven't got through the stage of knowing it isn't scary.
Beau had a bad experience in being backed so you just need to be patient and watch and see her change :) |
